Diesel Services of America has some additional tips for your ship to shore power cord. These three plug tips will also extend the life of your marine generator and the cord itself. Burnt plugs and melted connectors can easily be avoided by using some simple precautions.
Plug Tip One: Always keep the ship to shore power cables stowed in an assigned area. A locker type compartment is best used for this integral piece of your power supply. Do not put in an area subject to moisture of near cleaning agents. Disconnect the plug if you do leave it hanging and dangling from the dockside hanger. Keeping the plug facing in a downward direction will prevent excess water intrusion. Always keep the dockside breakers in the off position when not in use.
Plug Tip Two: Dockside power sources can and will vary depending upon your location. Identifying before arrival the power sources at different marinas and ports will lessen difficulties getting powered up. Purchasing multiple corresponding pigtail adapters will make your ship to shore connections much more efficient. The 30 Amp locking receptacle is the most common at US marinas.
Plug Tip Three: Stay away from tightly coiling your ship to shore cord. This will cause unnecessary generation of heat. Heat transfer will cause improper loads and balancing issues. Certain electronics and LED’s especially like a steady constant supply of power. Fluctuating power is detrimental to many different devices on your boat. Steer clear of running your ship to shore cord around hatches and doors. Pinching of the ship to shore cord repeatedly will cause fraying and exposure to the elements. Having the ship to shore cord plugs and connectors in their secured and fully locked positions is a best practice. Tugging on the cords at both ends the male and female will verify if they are properly connected.
