A quick history lesson from the exciting minds of Volvo Penta Marine.

Volvo Penta’s roots go all the way back to 1868. Originally founded as Sköfde Gjuteri och Mekaniska Verkstad, the company began as a manufacturer of hardware and cast-iron goods including ploughs and threshing machines, pots and pans, and boilers. In 1907, the name Penta was adopted after the Greek word meaning five. This represented the five gentlemen who presented the first drawings for the infamous B1 engine that Edvard Hubendick designed.

The onset of The Great Depression in the 1920’s may have cast a dark shadow on many companies, however Penta managed to pull through stronger than ever when they became Penta Volvo. In January 1959, the acclaimed Aquamatic was presented at the New York Boat show. This was a monumental moment for Penta Volvo Marine and for the leisure boating industry. In the decades that followed, Penta Volvo Marine has continued to expand and reform the way marine vessels are powered.
